April 20, 2026
Location: Birmingham, ALDepartment: Research & DevelopmentEmployment Type: Full-TimeStart Date: ASAP
Position Summary
We are seeking a driven and innovative Scientist I to support the development of next-generation gamma-delta (γδ) T cell engager (TCE) platforms. This role will contribute to the design, production, and functional characterization of engineered fusion proteins and immune cell–directed therapeutics. The successful candidate will work at the interface of protein engineering, viral vector technology, and T cell immunobiology to advance novel immune-engaging therapeutic strategies.
Key Responsibilities
· Design and construct plasmids for recombinant protein and viral vector production
· Express and purify engineered proteins (fusion proteins, scFvs, bispecific antibodies) from mammalian system.
· Operate and maintain ÄKTA FPLC systems for protein purification, including affinity, ion exchange, and size-exclusion chromatography
· Develop and optimize purification workflows, analyze chromatograms, and troubleshoot purification challenges
· Perform protein characterization (SDS-PAGE, Western blot, SEC, concentration analysis, etc.)
· Assist in evaluation, selection and management of 3rd party vendors and CROs. Including data analysis and report review/ editing.
· Culture and manipulate mammalian cell lines and primary immune cells
· Design and execute in vitro T cell functional assays (activation, proliferation, cytotoxicity)
· Perform and analyze multicolor flow cytometry experiments
· Maintain accurate documentation and present data to internal teams
· Contribute to experimental strategy and troubleshooting
Required Qualifications
· PhD in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related discipline
· Hands-on experience in recombinant protein purification (affinity chromatography, SEC, ion exchange)
· Strong molecular biology skills (cloning, plasmid design, PCR, sequence analysis)
· Experience with viral vector packaging and transduction
· Proficiency in mammalian tissue culture
· Experience performing Western blot and related protein assays
Preferred Qualifications
· Background in T cell immunology (strongly preferred)
· Experience working with primary human T cells or other immune subsets
· Flow cytometry experience (panel design, compensation, data interpretation)
· Experience with immune-engaging biologics (e.g., bispecific antibodies, TCEs, CAR constructs)
· Familiarity with protein engineering platforms
· 1-3 year experience in academic post-doc, pharma post-doc or pharma company R&D
